This Carolingian illumination shows Charles the Bald receiving a Bible from Count Vivian and the monks of Tours. Charles received the western kingdom in the partition of 843. The image is close to his lifetime, but it depicts a manuscript presentation—not the signing of the Treaty of Verdun.

The count takes an oath before the consuls of Agen. Alphonse and his wife Jeanne held Toulouse; their deaths without an heir in 1271 brought their lands to the royal domain. This miniature illustrates the count’s exercise of authority, not the subsequent transfer of the inheritance.
